The IRS sends a CP14 notice to tell you that you owe unpaid taxes. It is usually the first notice in the collection sequence.
What Triggered This Notice
Per IRS.gov: “We sent you this notice because you owe money on unpaid taxes.” The notice lists the exact amount owed and the specific due date for your account.
Your Deadline
Pay the amount you owe by the due date printed on your specific notice.
What Happens If You Miss It
Two things start immediately: interest accrues on the unpaid balance, and a Failure to Pay penalty applies if you cannot pay in full by the deadline. A CP14 alone does not mean a lien or levy is imminent — but it starts the clock. Left unresolved, a CP14 typically escalates to CP501, then CP503, then a formal levy warning.
What To Do
Pay in full, apply online for an installment agreement, or call the number on the notice if you disagree with the amount or need a hardship review.
